James P. McMurrer, MD
Medical Director
James P. McMurrer is Inova Kellar Center's medical director and has served at the center since it opened in 1991. Dr. McMurrer is board certified in child, adolescent and adult psychiatry. He received his medical degree and also completed an internship, residency and fellowship from Georgetown University School of Medicine.
Dr. McMurrer has served our community for 35 years, currently as chairman of the Mental Health Committee of the Fairfax County Medical Society, and as assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical Center. Dr. McMurrer has been recognized as one of the top doctors in the Washington area by Washingtonian Magazine. As medical director of Inova Kellar Center, he partners with our clinical staff to provide direction and leadership.
Lorency Fernando, MD
Lorency Fernando, MD, is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in child, adolescent and adult psychiatry.
Dr. Fernando received her medical degree from Kilpauk Medical College in Chennai, India. She completed her internship residency at Quillen College of Medicine, Johnson City, TN, and her fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Menninger Department of Psychiatry, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, where she served as chief resident for the 2004 and 2005 academic years. She received the William P. Moore, MD, and Roy N. Aruffo, MD, Resident Award of Excellence in 2005.
Dr. Fernando provides psychiatric evaluations, medication management and developmental guidance in our clinic. Her areas of interest include childhood affective and anxiety disorders, ADHD, psychiatric and behavioral manifestations of Aspergers and autistic spectrum disorders, and personality disorders in adolescents.
Gordon Gondos, MD
Gordon Gondos, MD, is board certified in child and adolescent psychiatry and general psychiatry. He has worked with Inova Kellar Center patients and their families for more than 10 years.
Dr. Gondos received his medical degree from Medical College of Virginia and completed an internship and residency from Albany Medical Center, and a fellowship from Children's National Medical Center. He also is assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University School of Medicine.
Stephanie Mayrant, MD
Stephanie Mayrant, MD, is a graduate of Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. She completed a psychiatry residency at Georgetown University Hospital and a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC, where she was named chief resident.
Dr. Mayrant is board certified by American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in adult psychiatry and is board eligible in child and adolescent psychiatry. At Inova Kellar Center she provides psychiatric evaluations, medication management, developmental guidance and psychotherapy. Her areas of interest include eating disorders, anxiety disorders and mood disorders. She also has extensive experience in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma focused CBT and exposure response prevention therapy.
Shruti Tewari, MD
Shruti Tewari, MD, received her medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA. She completed her residency at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, and her fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. She served as chief resident for the 2010-11 academic year and was awarded the Dee Grant Addiction Medicine Award during residency.
At Inova Kellar Center, Dr. Tewari provides psychiatric evaluations, medication management, therapy and developmental guidance. Her areas of interest include childhood affective and anxiety disorders and preschool evaluations. She has an interest in the area of disaster and refugee psychiatry as well as working with culturally diverse populations. She enjoys being an advocate in the field of children’s mental health.
Dr. Tewari is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in adult psychiatry and board eligible in child and adolescent psychiatry.
Sonia Thomas, MD
Sonia Thomas, MD, is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in child, adolescent and adult psychiatry. Since 2005, at the Inova Kellar Center Dr. Thomas has provided treatment to children, adolescents and their families in the Partial Hospitalization Program and Outpatient Family Services. In this role, she provides medication management, developmental guidance and preschool consultation to children with sleeping, feeding or behavioral difficulties.
As a member of the Kellar Center Leadership Team, she provides clinical supervision, instruction and direction to the therapists and supports staff throughout the organization. In addition to her role with Inova Kellar Center, Dr. Thomas is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at George Washington University, Washington, DC.
A graduate of Goa medical College in Goa, India, she completed her Psychiatry Residency at Howard University Hospital, Washington DC. She also completed a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC, where she was named Chief Resident. Dr. Thomas's clinical areas of interest include adolescent substance related disorders and childhood affective and anxiety disorders.
