We have 13+ Joint Commission accreditations and Gold Seals of Approval.     Four Inova hospitals have received the highest level of honor from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
 


Third-party recognitions and accreditations are important to the Inova Health System. These recognitions allow us to not only benchmark our performance against others, but ensure that we are providing the best care to our neighbors in the Northern Virginia and Washington, DC metro community.

U.S. News & World Report

All five of Inova Health System's hospitals have been ranked among the Washington, DC, region's best hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. Our hospitals scored in the top 25 percent in the DC area, with Inova Fairfax Hospital ranking second.

To be ranked in its metro area, a hospital must score in the top 25 percent among its peers in at least one of 16 medical specialties. Inova Fairfax Hospital has been ranked among the U.S. News "America's Best Hospitals" fourteen times in the past 15 years.

Joint Commission Accreditation

The purpose of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization survey and accreditation process is to evaluate facilities' compliance with nationally established Joint Commission Standards that relate to quality of care, safety of care, and safety in the environment of care. Joint Commission is one of the nation's most respected accrediting agencies, and achieving their standards ensures that our performance and improvement is being held to the highest standards in the United States.

Magnet™ Designation

Magnet designation is a coveted designation to recognize excellence in nursing care. The American Nurses Credentialing Center, the nation's largest nursing accrediting and credentialing organization, created and administers the program. Hospitals that receive Magnet designation must meet a stringent set of 14 standards of care and practice (with 95 different criteria), including categories such as clinical skill and leadership.When and if Magnet status is awarded, it is granted for a four-year period.

The following Inova Hospitals have achieved Magnet designation:
  • Inova Fairfax Hospital (four recertifications, most recently in 2011)
  • Inova Fair Oaks Hospital (certified in March 2009)
  • Inova Loudoun Hospital (certified in 2008 and again in 2011)

Premier Healthcare Alliance national Quest collaborative

Each of Inova Health System's hospitals were named 2011 Top Performing Hospitals in the Premier Healthcare Alliance's national Quest collaborative. Culminating a voluntary 3-year QUEST program, Inova participated in the exercise out of a commitment to patient best interests and a dedication to reducing preventable harm and readmission. Gold Plus Award for Stroke Care - American Heart Association "Get with the Guidelines" Program

logo: Get with the Guidelines 2011The American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Stroke Association (ASA) have again awarded Inova Fairfax Hospital the Gold Plus Award for outstanding specialized stroke treatment. The "Get with the Guidelines" designation indicates that stroke assessment and services at the hospital provide patients with the best chance of survival. National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC)

The National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers represents a consortium of national, professional organizations dedicated to the improvement of the quality of care and monitoring of outcomes of patients with diseases of the breast. They have developed the following objectives to measure accreditation:
  • Consensus development of criteria for breast centers and a survey process to monitor compliance
  • Strengthen the scientific basis for improving quality care
  • Establish a National Breast Disease Database to report patterns of care and effect quality improvement
  • Reduce the morbidity and mortality of breast cancer by improving screening mammography and advocating for increased access to and participation in clinical trials

Commission on Cancer - Outstanding Achievement Award logoOutstanding Achievement Award designees from the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer

The Commission on Cancer (CoC) Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. A facility receives the OAA following the on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the facility demonstrates a Commendation level of compliance with six standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program and also receives a compliance rating for the remaining 30 standards. The six standards that form the basis of the OAA criteria are drawn from the following five areas of program activity:

  • cancer committee leadership
  • cancer data management
  • research
  • community outreach
  • quality improvement

OAA recipients represent community-based facilities; teaching hospitals, NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and Network Cancer Programs as well as both newly accredited programs and those that are currently accredited by the Commission on Cancer. In March 2009, Inova Alexandria Hospital and Inova Loudoun Hospital received the 2008 Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer, joining 2007 recipient Inova Fairfax Hospital in this honor.

Presented by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, the Beacon Award recognizes the nation's top critical (intensive) care units. Units are judged on 42 criteria, and nurses must demonstrate they achieve excellent patient outcomes, have created and promote a healing environment conducive to their patients' well-being and exhibit leadership and ethical nursing practices.

logo - Center of Excellence for Weight Loss SurgeryCenter of Excellence for Weight Loss Surgery by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery

Inova Fair Oaks Hospital is nationally recognized as a Center of Excellence by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, which recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in obesity surgery.

To earn a Center of Excellence designation, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital underwent a series of site inspections during which all aspects of the obesity surgery center program's surgical processes were closely examined and data on health outcomes were collected. Inova Fair Oaks Hospital and other obesity surgery centers receiving the Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation agree to continue to share information on clinical pathways, protocols and outcomes data.

Inova Fair Oaks Hospital was identified by the U.S. Senate Productivity and Quality Award for Virginia (SPQA) as a model organization that has demonstrated excellence and maturity in its business approaches, deployment and results. The SPQA performance criteria and core values are adapted from the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and are used by many top public and private institutions as a proven business model.

Rehabilitation Accreditation

logo - CARF International The Inova Rehabilitation Center is accredited by CARF International (formerly the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities), an independent, nonprofit accreditor of health and human services. The CARF accreditation process starts with a provider's commitment to continuous improvement and culminates with external review and recognition that the provider's business and service practices meet international standards of quality – with all the steps in between focused on optimal outcomes for the persons the provider serves and sustained organizational success.


logo - Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical SocietyCertified Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Program

The Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO) program at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is the only program in Northern Virginia accredited by the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society, and one of just 600 in the United States to carry this quality accreditation.

In 2010, Inova Alexandria Hospital Respiratory Care Services earned a two-year accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP), a national accrediting organization that sets the standard for quality respiratory care.


Bronze National Quality Award for Skilled Nursing Facilities

In July 2010, Inova Loudoun Nursing and Rehabilitation Center received the Bronze National Quality Award from the American Health Care Association. This national award is well known within the nursing home industry as a benchmark for high quality care. Facilities are evaluated on criteria based on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. In receiving the award, Inova Loudoun Nursing and  Rehabilitation Center demonstrates high levels of performance and excellence.

Inova Fairfax Hospital has been named multiple times as a Consumer Choice Award winner for the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area by the National Research Corporation (NRC). The award is based on ratings from healthcare consumers, who select hospitals for having the highest quality and image in the country.

Inova was recognized for offering employees numerous benefits, including access to flextime, before- and after-school care,training through the Inova Leadership Institute and benefits for adoptive parents.

In an annual survey that measures women's representation among top-paid and top-tier positions at America's largest companies, the National Association for Female Executives (NAFE) found in 2006 that Inova Health System is one of the nation's top 30 companies for executive women. Inova ranked in the in the top ten and was one of only three non-profit organizations named.

logoIn 2008, Inova Health System was ranked in the top 10 of the nation's 100 most integrated health systems. This marks the tenth consecutive year that Inova has been recognized in the annual report issued by Verispan, the nation's premier ratings system for quality in integrated healthcare networks (IHN).

In 2010, Inova Health System was awarded an Aster Award, an elite program, recognizing outstanding healthcare professionals for excellence in advertising  and marketing efforts.
