Inova Lung Cancer Screening Program

Detecting lung cancer early with Inova's CT screening can lower the chance of lung cancer mortality.

Recently, The New England Journal of Medicine published a study with results from the National Cancer Institute’s National Lung Screening Trial. The results indicate that screening high-risk individuals with low-dose CT scans reduces deaths by 20 percent in comparison to lung cancer screening with traditional chest X-rays.

In addition to a positive impact on lung cancer mortality, the use of low-dose CT scans decreases a patient's exposure to radiation. With this new information, cancer institutes across the country are adopting CT imaging as a standard of care in early detection of lung cancer.

The Inova Lung Cancer Screening Program offers low dose CT scans for individuals matching the following criteria:

  • Age 55 – 74 years old
  • Smoked more than a pack a day for 30 years
  • If no longer smoking, smoking cessation occured less than 15 years ago
  • Age 50 years and older
  • Smoked more than a pack a day for 20 years
  • Has one additional risk factor other than second-hand smoke

Cost: $310 due at the time of the screening
