Scholarship Application Process
Review the application requirements for an Inova Health System scholarship
Inova Health System offers both general scholarships available on a very limited basis and specialized nursing career scholarship programs. Nursing excellence scholarships are awarded to high-potential Inova employees, academically recognized college seniors, students enrolled in specially designated nursing programs and Inova nurses working on an advanced degree.
The following scholarships are available:

Internal (Inova employees)
- All full-time employees, part-time employees, PRN, and status D staff are eligible
- Must be entering senior year or final semester at an accredited nursing program
- Awards up to $5,000, not exceeding the cost of the program
- Supplements any tuition assistance awarded through the Educational Assistance Program at Inova Health System (if applicable)
- Requires a 2-year full-time work commitment as a staff nurse at an Inova facility. (See work commitment form
for details.) This work commitment must begin no later than four months after receiving the award
External applicants
- Must be entering senior year or final semester at an accredited nursing program
- Awards up to $5,000, not exceeding the cost of the program
- Requires a 2-year full-time work commitment as a staff nurse at an Inova facility. (See work commitment form for details.) This work commitment must begin no later than two months after receiving the award.
Inova new graduate nurses
- All full-time employee new graduate hires (RN1) with student loans from their nursing education are eligible
- Must have completed a nursing program (AD or BSN) in the last 12 months (at the time of application)
- Awards up to $5,000 for loan repayment, not exceeding the cost of the loan
- Loan documentation must be provided at the interview
- Requires a 2-year full-time work commitment as a staff nurse at an Inova facility. (See work commitment form for details.) This work commitment must begin no later than four months after receiving the award.
Advanced practice
- All full-time employees, part-time employees who are working in a budgeted, Inova tuition assistance-eligible position at Inova
- Must be accepted into an advanced nursing degree program (i.e. RN-BSN, MSN, MS, PhD)
- Must complete the program within five years
- Awards up to $5,000, not exceeding the cost of the program
- Supplements any tuition assistance awarded through the Educational Assistance Program at Inova Health System. Recipients must submit tuition assistance eligible amount and amount utilized in year of application.
- Requires a work commitment that will be served concurrently with the degree by working in a budgeted, Inova tuition assistance-eligible position at Inova. (See work commitment form for details.)
Northern Virginia Community College scholarships
- Must be enrolled in the Northern Virginia Community College nursing degree program
- Awards up to $5,000, not exceeding the cost of the program
- For Inova employees, supplements any tuition assistance awarded through the Educational Assistance Program at Inova Health System (if applicable)
- Requires a 2-year full-time work commitment as a staff nurse at an Inova facility. (See work commitment form for details.) This work commitment must begin no later than four months after receiving the award.
George Mason University 2nd degree Inova Claude Moore Scholarship Program
- Must be enrolled in the George Mason University 2nd degree nursing program
- Awards will cover in-state tuition and lab fees to cover the cost of the program (books and other student fees are not covered by the scholarship)
- For Inova employees, supplements any tuition assistance awarded through the Educational Assistance Program at Inova Health System (if applicable)
- Requires a 2-year full-time work commitment as a staff nurse at an Inova facility. (See work commitment form for details.) This work commitment must begin no later than four months after receiving the award.
- 10 scholarships available
Marymount University 2nd degree/Inova Health System/BB&T Scholarships
- Must be entering the final semester of the Marymount University 2nd degree program
- Awards up to $7,500, not exceeding the cost of the program
- For Inova employees, supplements any tuition assistance awarded through the Educational Assistance Program at Inova Health System (if applicable)
- Requires a 2-year full-time work commitment as a staff nurse at an Inova facility. (See work commitment form for details.) This work commitment must begin no later than four months after receiving the award.
- Up to 10 awards available
Shenandoah University 2nd degree Scholarship Program
- Must be enrolled in the Shenandoah University 2nd degree program
- Awards up to $7,500, not exceeding the cost of the program
- For Inova employees, supplements any tuition assistance awarded through the Educational Assistance Program t Inova Health System (if applicable)
- Requires a 2-year full-time work commitment as a staff nurse at an Inova facility. (See work commitment form for details.) This work commitment must begin no later than four months after receiving the award.
- Up to 20 awards available
Inova Alexandria TWIG Scholarship
- Undergraduate students must be entering senior year or final semester at an accredited nursing program
- Awards up to $5,000, not exceeding the cost of the program
- Supplements any tuition assistance awarded through the Educational Assistance Program at Inova Health System (if applicable)
- Requires a 2-year full-time work commitment as a staff nurse at Inova Alexandria Hospital. (See work commitment form
for details.) This work commitment must begin no later than four months after receiving the award. - One award per year
Inova Fairfax Auxiliary Scholarship
- Undergraduate students must be entering senior year or final semester at an accredited nursing program
- Awards up to $5,000, not exceeding the cost of the program
- Supplements any tuition assistance awarded through the Educational Assistance Program at Inova Health System (if applicable)
- Requires a 2-year full-time work commitment as a staff nurse at Inova Fairfax Hospital. (See work commitment form for details.) This work commitment must begin no later than four months after receiving the award.
- One award per year
Roseann Prezioso Kwiatkowski
- Undergraduate students must be entering senior year or final semester at an accredited nursing program
- This $1,000 award will supplement one of our existing scholarships
- Preference will be given to individuals who seek to practice in a critical care patient care unit at Inova Fairfax Hospital. Candidates will be selected from existing scholarship applications.
- Requires a 2-year full-time work commitment as a staff nurse at Inova Fairfax Hospital. (See work commitment form for details.) This work commitment must begin no later than four months after receiving the award.
- Two awards per year
Karlgaard Family Scholarship
- May be used for undergraduate or graduate programs
- Awards up to $5,000, not exceeding the cost of the program
- Requires a 2-year full-time work commitment as a staff nurse at Inova Fairfax Hospital. (See work commitment form for details.) This work commitment must begin no later than four months after receiving the award.
- Two awards per year
Carl and Josie Biggs Nursing Scholarship
- May be used for undergraduate or graduate programs
- Awards up to $5,000, not exceeding the cost of the program
- Requires a 2-year, full-time work commitment as a staff nurse at Inova Fairfax Hospital. (See work commitment form for details.) This work commitment must begin no later than four months after receiving the award.
- One award per year
Inova summer externs
- Inova summer externs entering their final year of nursing school are eligible
- Awards up to $5,000, not exceeding the cost of the program
- Supplements any tuition assistance awarded through the Educational Assistance Program at Inova Health System (if applicable)
- Requires a 2-year full-time work commitment as a staff nurse at an Inova facility. (See work commitment form for details.) This work commitment must begin no later than four months after receiving the award.
