Internships and Fellowships

An internship is a program for new graduate nurses who participate in training that will foster learning in a specialty area of nursing.

A fellowship is a program for experienced registered nurses who desire to enter a specialty field in which he or she has no current experience. Entry into a fellowship program is accomplished through the application process at the Inova Employment Services or Human Resources office for your operating unit. When positions become available, the department will post and interview candidates. The department manager will select the candidate, and Employment Services will extend the offer.

An externship is an experiential learning opportunity, similar to an internship, designed to give college students practical experiences in their field of study. Participants are responsible for the delivery of nursing care, under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse. You will strengthen your clinical skills while learning the professional practice model for nursing at Inova Health System facilities.
