Inova Health System welcomes student nurses to join our innovative Nurse Extern Program to help you:

All nurse extern positions will have a one year post-graduation work commitment at an Inova Health System facility.
Nurse extern responsibilities
As a member of the healthcare team, you will be responsible for the delivery of nursing care, under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse. You will strengthen your clinical skills while learning the professional practice model for nursing at Inova Health System facilities.
Participation requirements
Student nurses must meet the following requirements in order to be considered for this program:
- Current enrollment in an accredited professional nursing program with the goal of becoming an RN
- Current GPA 3.0 or higher
- Completion of at least one acute care hospital clinical experience prior to beginning the externship. For placement in a specialty area, consideration will be given to those students already having completed a clinical experience in the requested area.
- Submission of a complete nurse extern application, to include:
- Online employment application
- Resume
- Official school transcripts
- Essay, with topic being "Why I Want to Be an Inova Extern" (minimum of 500 words)
- Current CPR certification from American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider
- One letter of reference from a clinical instructor
- Completion of an exemplary interview with the nurse extern team

Once accepted into the program, these are mandatory events for nurse externs
- One half-day employment processing (date TBD)
- "Inova New" orientation
June 7, 2010 - Extern clinical orientation
June 8-10, 2010 - Mid-summer social
- Final reception and recognition luncheon
