T.C. Williams Surgical Tech Program

The Claude Moore Scholars Surgical Tech Program is a two-year course of study designed for T.C. Williams High School students only. The program is jointly sponsored by Inova and the Claude Moore Charitable Fund (CMCF) and offered through the Alexandria Public School System at T.C. Williams High School.

Over the course of the required two-years of academic study, students will experience a combination of classroom and clinical work. The clinical rotation will take place at Inova Alexandria Hospital.


Objectives

After the two-year program of study, the candidate will be able to:

  • Prepare the operating room
  • Prepare patients for surgery
  • Assist the surgeon with the operating process
  • Operate lights, suction machines, and diagnostic equipments during the operating procedure
  • Clear operating room after a surgical procedure

Content outline

Included in the course study are the following:

  • History of surgery
  • Hazards in the operating room
  • Biomedical principles
  • Perioperative case management
  • Minimally invasive surgery

Admission qualifications

There are two different courses, Surgical Scrub Tech I and Surgical Scrub Tech II. Please see the requirements below. Class registration takes place at the same time you register for your other classes.


Surgical Scrub Tech I Course (pre-clinical)

  • Entering senior year of high school
  • Minimum GPA of 2.3 (C+)
  • Minimum passing grade of 80% in final subject grades
  • Passing grade on Level I Competency Check-list (Pass/Fail Score)
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong study skills
  • Ability to follow directions

Surgical Scrub Tech II (clinical)

  • High school diploma
  • Minimum GPA of 2.3 (C+)
  • Minimum passing grade of 80% in final subject grades
  • Passing grade on Level I Competency Check-list (Pass/Fail Score)
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to follow directions
