All of the fellow residents and attendings are kind and friendly people who are equally encouraging outside the hospital environment. There's an incredible variety of cases and cultures that keep things interesting. And the intern year schedule is far from overwhelming, leaving a lot of time to explore D.C. and Northern Virginia.

Pediatric cardiology

Hobbies

Dance aned theater, reading, spending time at National Harbor with my husband

Program pluses

I love Inova Fairfax because the program offers an amazing network of support from attendings and senior residents. I love this program because the learning opportunities are abundant, and provide an education with real depth and breadth. It is really exciting to treat patients with pathology that you only expected to read about. There is a great balance between work and quality of life, which is really nice when you live so close to a culturally rich city like Washingtn, D.C. When you join the program you become part of a well coordinated, high-achieving family, focused on evidence based quality of care and determined to make you an excellent pediatrician ready and able to achieve your goals.

Dr. Jessica Howard

Medical school

Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine

Home

Chesapeake, VA

Career goal

Pediatric cardiology

Hobbies

I enjoy spending time with my spoiled dogs, watching college football (go Hokies!), traveling and spending time with friends out and about in Northern Virginia and D.C.

Program pluses

This program was so appealing to me because of the friendly atmosphere and relationship among the residents and attendings. The approachability of everyone we work with makes for an optimal learning environment. The size of the program is optimal as well: small enough that everyone has a voice and we can work one-on-one with attendings/specialists, and large enough to be a major referral center, have virtually every subspecialty, and see a vast variety of patients and pathology.

Dr. Sandy Huynh

Dr. Julie Kim

Home

Toronto, Canada, but now settled in Northern Virginia

Career goal

Undecided as to which subspecialty, but I would like to work in an academic setting.

Hobbies

Cooking and baking, watching musicals, wine shopping, composing music

Program pluses

Everyone is very supportive, friendly and understanding, especially our program director, Dr. Donnelly, and our chiefs. I love living in the D.C. metro area with its convenience, variety of cultural experiences, coexistence of both urban and suburban settings. I know it's redundant, but we really do see the widest spectrum of cases at Inova. If you are the type of person who learns by seeing actual cases, then this is THE PLACE to be!

Perfect combination of a great learning place with a large diversity of patients, lots of research opportunities, attendings and seniors who love to teach and are always there to help you. Great nurses and ancillary staff are a huge bonus.

Dr. Astrid Sarvis

Medical school

University of Mississippi Medical Center

Home

Greenville, MS

Career goal

Adolescent medicine or public health

Hobbies

Spending time with my son and husband, church, nonfiction reading, movies, live comedy

Program pluses

What appealed to me most about Inova Fairfax is its emphasis on learning. Unlike most programs which have overwhelming first-year schedules, our curriculum is designed to ease residents into the process. Although we work hard, there is ample time for other things like studying or spending time with family. Another great aspect of the program is the nice balance between autonomy and oversight of residents. Finally, there is a great support system here which is particularly important to me being that I am so far away from my own family and friends.

Supportive, family-like atmosphere, great resident/faculty interactions, ICCC, great balance of complicated or unusual patient cases with bread and butter peds.

The people. I truly love my fellow residents and can always count on them for help and support. Attendings are committed to teaching and really looking at us as individuals. The food in the cafe is pretty good, too!
