Capsule Technology
Capsule endoscopy allows a gastroenterologist to examine the entire small intestine. Patients are given a vitamin sized capsule to swallow. The capsule is actually a small camera and light that moves through the intestine and transmits images to a data recorder worn at the patient's waist.
The capsule is disposable and passes naturally with a bowel movement. This procedure was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2001. Capsule endoscopy is not a substitute for regular endoscopy, but may be used when additional diagnostic information is needed.
Capsule endoscopy is offered at Inova Fairfax Hospital and Inova Fair Oaks Hospital.
