The flu is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by specific viruses. It can result in mild to severe illness and, at times, can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination every year. The Inova Fight the Flu program delivers nearly 80,000 shots annually, making us one of the largest providers in Northern Virginia.
Unlike your local pharmacy, Inova can vaccinate children as young as six months of age so you can get your entire family taken care of at the same appointment. To find an Inova flu clinic near you, click here.
Who Should Get Vaccinated
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends that everyone get vaccinated because a flu shot is the only way to prevent the flu. Some people are at even higher risk for serious complications including:
Contrary to popular myths the flu shot cannot cause the flu, is absolutely safe for pregnant women and has no known serious side effects. For more information on myths and facts about the vaccine, click here to go to the CDC Web site.
When to Get Vaccinated
Because flu viruses may change from year to year, vaccines are updated annually. The only way to be protected each year is to get a new vaccine each year.
October or November is the best time to get vaccinated, but getting a shot in December or even later can still be beneficial since most flu activity occurs in January or later in most years. Though it varies each year, flu season can last as late as May. To find out when Inova flu clinics are open, click here.
