Treasure Troves

Inova Fairfax Hospital volunteers staff our Treasure Troves, located in McLean, Annandale and Springfield, VA. Proceeds from the stores directly benefit Inova Fairfax Hospital programs and services. The volunteers in these locations make an important contribution to the hospital, and opportunities are available for both adults and teens. (See below for specific details regarding teen volunteer opportunities.)

The shops accept donations of gently worn clothing, useful furniture and household items. All shops welcome donations any time during store hours. You may also drop off items on the hospital campus. They must be bagged in plastic and placed in the large green bin to the left of the main (blue) entrance to Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children.

The Treasure Troves also offer consignment arrangements, splitting proceeds 60-40 with consignors. Store proceeds from consignment also benefit the hospital. Shops accept consignments during the hours listed by appointment only and generally keep consigned goods for 30 days.

Consignors, who pay a nominal annual fee to participate, should call each shop to schedule an appointment and to learn if any items are temporarily embargoed because of overstock or sales history.

Teen volunteer opportunities

We can almost always use the help of teens at our Treasure Troves. The minimum age to volunteer at the shops is 13 years old.

In addition, the Treasure Troves may be able to accommodate students working on a project basis when they need only a few hours to meet a community service requirement.

Responsibilities include assisting customers with selections, receiving and processing donations and consignments, handling sales, creating displays and performing other typical retail tasks.

Because all proceeds from store sales are donated to the hospital, working in these locations qualifies as charitable community service. There are other benefits:

  • Students thinking about business, marketing or merchandising careers learn special skills related to retail activities and gain experience in that area.
  • If you choose a Treasure Trove store, you do not need to attend the four-hour entry-level training required to work in the hospital or other clinical settings.
  • You may be able to work on a project basis if you need only a few hours to meet a school requirement.
  • The shops offer more evening and weekend opportunities than hospital service does.
To volunteer at a Treasure Trove, please apply in person at the store of your choice.
