The aortic valve divides the left ventricle and the aorta. It opens during left ventricular contraction and then closes to prevent oxygenated blood from flowing backward.
A healthy aortic valve keeps blood moving in one direction, opening and closing with each heartbeat. A damaged or diseased valve does not allow blood to flow properly. Sometimes the valve doesn’t close completely and the heart must work harder to pump blood.
