Interventional Cardiology
Interventional cardiology at Inova Heart and Vascular Institute deals specifically with advanced, minimally invasive cardiac treatments that rely on catheters and small incisions instead of traditional surgery. Today’s interventional procedures greatly expand the treatment options available to Inova cardiologists and their patients.
IHVI is at the forefront of both research and innovative advancements in interventional cardiology. Our researchers conduct groundbreaking research, participate in national clinical trials and test new catheterization devices and techniques. We continue to advance medical knowledge in this growing and exciting field.
Our cardiac catheterization experts perform more than 5,000 procedures annually and diagnose and manage the most complex patients. Inova cardiologists are among a limited number nationwide who perform balloon mitral valvuloplasty for adults as a substitute for open heart surgery. Our physicians also conduct minimally invasive device closures for patients with atrial septal defect (ASD), patent foramen ovale (PFO) and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA).
