What is an interventional radiologist?
Interventional radiologists are board-certified physicians who specialize in minimally invasive, targeted
treatments. They do this through their knowledge of the least invasive treatments with diagnostic and clinical
experience across all specialties. They use X-rays, MRI and other imaging to insert a catheter in the body,
usually in an artery, to treat at the source of the disease.
Many conditions that once required surgery can be treated nonsurgically by interventional radiologists.
Interventional radiology treatments offer less risk, less pain and less recovery time compared to open
surgery.
First in the field
Vascular and interventional radiology at Inova Alexandria Hospital was the first in Northern Virginia to
perform peripheral and renal angioplasty, stent placement and abdominal aortic stent graft.
We also were among the earliest vascular and interventional radiologists in the mid-Atlantic to perform
uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). Our UFE program is currently one of the largest and most successful in the
country.
The future of interventional radiology at Inova Alexandria Hospital
Inova Alexandria Hospital's 2010 Project is a reconfiguration and expansion plan to enhance our healthcare
services to our communities. The vascular and interventional radiology department has expanded by 16,000 square
feet to accommodate patients in the most convenient, state-of-the-art facility possible.
The expansion includes a dedicated interventional radiology lab, two cardiovascular ultrasound rooms and a
radiology department area renovation.
