Expertise and leadership

Inova Alexandria Hospital is a national leader in vascular and interventional radiology services. Our cutting edge imaging and diagnostic techniques make it possible for many of our patients to avoid open surgery for even some of the most complex health problems. We perform thousands of procedures annually. We consistently keep our research, treatments and technologies at the forefront of minimally invasive modern medicine.

Our expert interventional radiologists

Inova Alexandria Hospital interventional radiologists

The interventional radiologists at Inova Alexandria Hospital are board-certified physicians who specialize in minimally invasive, targeted treatments. They do this through their knowledge of the least invasive treatments with diagnostic and clinical experience across all specialties. They use X-rays, MRI and other imaging to insert a catheter in the body, usually in an artery, to treat at the source of the disease.

Many conditions that once required surgery can be treated nonsurgically by interventional radiologists at Inova Alexandria Hospital. Interventional radiology treatments offer less risk, less pain and less recovery time compared to open surgery.

First in the field

Vascular and interventional radiology at Inova Alexandria Hospital was the first in Northern Virginia to perform peripheral and renal angioplasty, stent placement and abdominal aortic stent graft.

Inova Alexandria Hospital was the first in the U.S. to enroll a patient in The SEATTLE II trial, offered at only 25 hospitals. The trial uses the EKOS EkoSonic® Endovascular Device which employs high-frequency, low-power ultrasound to deliver the clot-busting medication tPA to the arteries at the time of an embolism.

We also were among the earliest vascular and interventional radiologists in the mid-Atlantic to perform uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). Our UFE program is currently one of the largest and most successful in the country.
