An internationally renowned neurosurgeon, Dr. James Ecklund brings a unique military background to Inova’s Neurosciences Program. The recently retired U.S. Army Colonel spent a distinguished military career involved in groundbreaking medical innovations and research, and was deployed as a neurosurgeon to Afghanistan and Iraq. As chairman of Inova’s Department of Neurosciences, he is committed to integrating best practice protocols, clinical trials, research and education to bring cutting-edge, accessible neurological care to patients in Northern Virginia.
After graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Dr. Ecklund attended medical school at the Uniformed Services University and completed a neurosurgical residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He eventually returned to Walter Reed to become chairman of the National Capital Consortium Neurosurgery Program, a collaborative service of Walter Reed Army Medical Center, National Naval Medical Center and the Uniformed Services University.
Now leading the largest and most comprehensive neurosciences program in the region, Dr. Ecklund is positioning Inova to capitalize on the groundbreaking developments ahead. “ We are on the brink of extraordinary technological and scientific breakthroughs,” he says. “ So many wonderful things are on the horizon, and Inova is engaged academically, medically and scientifically to bring them to our patients in Northern Virginia.”
Dr. Ecklund holds a variety of leadership positions with neurosurgical and national organizations, and has received numerous awards for distinguished service during his military career. He is board-certified by the American Board of Neurosurgeons, and a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
