Areas of special interest: spine and peripheral nerve

The immediate, dramatic impact he makes on his patients – easing pain, restoring function and saving lives – is most rewarding to
Dr. John Hamilton. As co-director of spine services, this fellowship-trained, award-winning spine surgeon is committed to building Inova into a bulwark of cutting-edge neurological care in Northern Virginia.
After graduating from Fisk University in Nashville, Dr. Hamilton earned an MD-PhD with honors from Meharry Medical College. He went on to a prestigious neurosurgery clinical fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, where he won the American Association of Neurological Surgeons’ Stereotactic Research Award for his groundbreaking work in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. He completed his neurosurgical residency with distinction at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, during which time he also completed an exclusive peripheral nerve fellowship at LSU Medical Center.
An intense interest in degenerative spine disease and spinal cord injury research led him to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for a fellowship in complex spinal disorders. There, he worked with some of the neurosurgical and orthopedic community’s leading spine experts and received the Congress of Neurological Surgeons’ Spine Fellowship Award.
This extraordinary background gives Dr. Hamilton a unique perspective when analyzing challenging neurosurgical issues. “My PhD makes me think like a scientist,” he says. “And my early interaction with preeminent neurosurgeons and ongoing involvement in the vanguard of neurosurgical procedures influence my work at Inova today.”
Dr. Hamilton is board certified in neurosurgery and a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
