Obesity has become an urgent public health problem, with 58% of Virginians being overweight or obese. It is a chronic illness, costing more than diabetes or heart disease.
To meet the needs created by this growing health concern, Inova Health System established the Healthy Kids Coalition, a partnership with all Northern Virginia jurisdictions to promote a healthier lifestyle for children and families through education on nutrition and exercise, and by creating social, monetary and policy-driven incentives that reinforce long-term change.
