Inova’s six-bed PIMC accommodates patients requiring various therapeutic interventions not performed on the general pediatric unit. In the PIMC, we perform required interventions in a monitored unit with enhanced staffing and expertise. These interventions include:
- Continuous nebulized beta-adrenergic agents for asthma
- High humidity/high-flow nasal cannula
- Insulin infusion
- Biphasic positive-airway pressure therapy
Many of the patients in PICU graduate to the PIMC and remain under the care of the intensive care staff or the pulmonologists. Pediatric intensivists and hospitalists care for children admitted to the unit regardless of the primary attending service. They provide formal consultation and/or assume attending responsibility as needed.
