MUGA (Mulitgated Acquisition)
What is a MUGA (Multigated Acquisition)?
A MUGA is a diagnostic test that is performed in the nuclear scanning section of the radiology department. A MUGA uses special radioactive dyes that are injected into the bloodstream and pass through the heart. The MUGA uses a computer to "scan" the heart and determine its size and function, both at rest and during exercise. Scans are performed when you are lying down and when you are riding a bicycle.
Preparing for the procedure
No special preparation is necessary. Once you arrive, an intravenous (IV) line will be placed in your arm. The test will take about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
During the procedure
Electrodes will be placed on your body to record an electrocardiogram. A small amount of radioactive dye will be placed through the IV in your arm, and a special camera will record the flow of the substance through the heart. You may be asked to exercise briefly.
After the procedure
Resume normal activities. Your Inova physician will inform you of the results of the test.
