Bioethics is the reasoned examination of decisions relating to moral issues being made by health care professionals, their patients and/or the patients families in matters of health, life and death. The hospital Bioethics Committee responds to requests for bioethical education and consultation when treatment dilemmas arise. The committee includes representatives from the medical staff, administration, nursing, care management, pastoral care and the community.
The committee provides a forum for patients, families and staff to identify and discuss values as well as differing perspectives regarding aggressive medical treatment. It also helps with the application of advance directives and coping with complex decisions related to chronic or terminal illnesses.
