Everyone is a potential organ or tissue donor, regardless of age or medical history. Although not every patient will be able to donate all organs or tissues for transplantation, he/she can make an invaluable contribution to those who are in need.
Inova Alexandria Hospital has an excellent relationship with the Washington Regional Transplant Consortium (WRTC) and the United Network for Organ Sharing. We have access to a nationwide, computerized list of people in need of transplants.
If you wish to be an organ donor, simply sign and carry a donor card. Show your card to your family and talk with them about your wishes because they will be asked, as your next-of-kin, to consent to your donation. Many state driver licenses, including the Virginia license, have a spot for indicating your organ donor status.
