How to Prepare for Your MRI

Your Safety

MRI does not use radiation and poses no known risk to most patients. For some patients, however, MRI may not be appropriate.

Before you come to the MRI Department, your nurse will ask you about your medical history. Based on this information, our staff will determine if MRI is appropriate for you.

Your nurse will ask you about:

  • recent illnesses
  • past surgeries
  • pregnancy

The presence of metal objects in your body during the MRI exam may cause you injury. Tell your nurse if you have any of the following:

  • brain aneurysm clips
  • cardiac pacemaker
  • implanted medication pumps
  • implanted nerve stimulating devices
  • intrauterine device (IUD)
  • any other surgically implanted or metallic object in your body

Before You Arrive

Metal objects outside your body must be removed before entering the scan room. These include items such as jewelry, watches, coins, clothing with zippers or belt buckles.

When You Arrive

When you arrive in the MRI Department, a technologist will review your chart and explain your exam to you. You will be offered ear plugs to muffle the loud knocking sounds generated by the MRI scanner.

You will recline on a table that will move through a long tubular hole into the MRI scanner. Once your body part to be scanned is inside the MRI scanner, the exam will begin.

During the Exam

Most exams are about 30 to 45 minutes in length. The exact time required for your exam will depend upon the reason for your visit. It is very important you remain still during the exam to ensure the best possible images.

Although MRI staff may not be in the room with you, you can contact your technologist through an intercom at all times.

Special Studies

Certain patients will require an injection of a contrast liquid to complete the exam. This liquid helps enhance the MRI images. The contrast material is different from the material used for CT scans and contains no iodine. It is very safe and has a very low incidence of side effects. Your radiologist and doctor will determine if this liquid will be used during your exam.

Your Comfort

Although MRI is not painful, lying still for an extended period in a small space can be slightly uncomfortable.

If you are uncomfortable in small spaces, tell your nurse. Arrangements can be made to make this exam as pleasant as possible.
