Our patients include newborns and older children who require surgery or other medical interventions.
"Hospital Heroes" is a special program hosted by the Inova Alexandria Hospital Same Day Surgery department for young children about to undergo surgery.
The program is held at the hospital every Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. for young patients, their parents and families. A 15-minute video tape is shown, discussing the various procedures the young patient will undergo. An assessment of the child is given to the parents by trained medical staff, if needed, and a short tour is given, if the Operating Room schedule allows.
Patients receive a handmade doll upon which the incision site can be drawn. The child can draw a "sleeping" face on one side and an "awake" face on the other side of the doll. At the program's end, the future "heroes" enjoy receiving balloons, a coloring book, and a small snack. After surgery, each "hero" receives a Certificate of Bravery signed by the nurses who cared for them.
