Inova Alexandria Hospital's unique neurovascular care unit is fully dedicated to the care of stroke patients, patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The unit provides complete stroke care, from diagnosis to treatment, rehabilitation and ongoing patient and caregiver support.
Nurses with specialized neuroscience training staff our stroke unit and are part of our Stroke Rapid Response Nurse Program. These nurses evaluate patients and facilitate stroke treatment throughout the hospital and the Emergency Department.
Our acute stroke team includes health care professionals from the Emergency Department, Radiology, Interventional Radiology, Neurology, Physical Medicine and Nursing - all of whom specialize in the treatment of stroke.
What is Stroke
A stroke occurs when a blood vessel bringing oxygen and nutrients to the brain bursts or is obstructed by a blood clot. When blood flow to the brain is interrupted, the brain is deprived of oxygen causing the affected area of the brain to die within minutes. Although dead brain tissue can not be saved, quick medical care can minimize the area of damage.
