Allergy & Immunology
Cardiovascular Disease
With 132 cardiologists and the area’s only dedicated cardiac facility, Inova Fairfax Hospital offers cardiac patients of all ages access to cardiac specialists who collaborate using innovative approaches to treat the most challenging cardiovascular problems. In addition to in and out patient diagnostic testing, the program offers interventional cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology and an Adult Congenital Heart Clinic and cardiac rehabilitation.
Critical Care
The Inova Fairfax campus houses 179 critical care beds in the following specialties:

Fifty-nine physician specialists oversee these units and help ensure that the most sophisticated services are available to these critically ill patients.
In addition, the Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit recently earned the Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence, given by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and specifically designated to recognize the nation’s top hospital critical care units.
Dermatology
Physicians in the dermatology section specialize in mircographic and laser cutaneous surgery and photophoresis. In addition, physicians conduct clinical research on psoriasis, actine keratosis, skin cancers and acne.
Endocrinology
Our endocrinologists specialize in treating disorders of the endocrine system, including diabetes and hyperthyroidism.
Gastroenterology
The gastroenterology department at Inova Fairfax Hospital offers diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for both in and out patients. Our team of 72 physicians uses the most advanced equipment not only for traditional endoscopies and colonoscopies, but also for new procedures including video capsule endocscopy, esophogeal ultrasound and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography (ERCP).
The Advanced Endoscopy Program at Inova Fairfax Hospital Cancer Center is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, program dedicated to providing diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients with digestive cancers. With new equipment and technologies now available in the gastroenterology laboratory, we can offer minimally invasive techniques to stage and treat cancers of the esophagus, stomach, bile ducts, pancreas and rectum. The program’s features include:
Photodynamic therapy for the ablation of Barrett's esophagus
with high grade dyplasia, intramucosal esophageal cancer and cholangiocarcinoma
Endoscopic mucosectomy for the resection of Barrett's esophagus with high
grade dyplasia and intramucosal esophageal carcinoma
Endoscopic ampullectomy
for resection of ampullary neoplasia
Endoscopic stenting of the biliary
tree, esophagus, duodenum and colon and

General Internal Medicine
The section of General Internal Medicine of the Department of Medicine is comprised of both community primary care physicians and hospital based Internal Medicine Physicians known as “hospitalists.” The outstanding clinicians within the Internal Medicine Section receive privileges at Inova Fairfax Hospital because of their commitment to excellence in the areas of patient care and education. The section is comprised of over 300 Internists of which approximately 200 have either solo or group practices within the Northern Virginia Region.
Hematology/Oncology
At the Inova Fairfax Hospital Cancer Center, 51 hematologists and oncologists collaborate to treat diseases of the blood and cancer. Services include in and out patient testing, chemotherapy and radiation oncology services.
Infectious Disease
At Inova Fairfax Hospital, infectious disease specialists work to ensure that communicable diseases are identified and treated as quickly as possible in hopes of preventing their spread. In addition, these 25 physicians also collaborate, as needed, with local health departments to help identify and track infectious diseases impacting the community.
We are proud that a member of our section, Donald Poretz, MD, is the President- Elect for the Infectious Disease Society of America, 2006-present.
Nephrology
Physicians conduct more than 5600 dialysis procedures a year, offer continuous renal replacement therapy and specialize in post renal transplant care. Currently, clinical research includes studies on hypertension and retarding the progression of renal disease.
Neurology
Neurologists at Inova Fairfax Hospital treat patients with all types of diseases of the nervous system in the neuroscience intensive care unit and neuroscience unit. The 42 physicians see a patient population that includes neuro-degenerative disorders, stroke and TIA, carotid dissection, spinal cord injury and seizure disorders including 24 hour monitoring in the neuroscience progressive care unit.
Pulmonary
The section of pulmonary medicine is comprised of 55 board-certified and board-eligible clinicians whose focus of care span both inpatient and outpatient care, as well as, both acute and chronic lung disease states. The section works closely with the hospital to provide a wide variety of both invasive and noninvasive testing. In addition to the large number of community pulmonologists, Inova has both lung transplant and chronic lung disease clinics to meet the needs of its community. Many of the section’s clinicians are both board certified in pulmonary medicine, as well as, critical care medicine permitting the continuum of care to go from the intensive care unit to the patient setting when necessary. The section also supports a very strong research program in pulmonary transplant medicine. The physicians who represent the section come from top academic institutions from around the country and choose to practice within Inova Fairfax Hospital for its commitment to excellence in patient care, education and research.
