Endoscopy
Inova Fairfax Hospital has been named by U.S. News and World Report as a top hospital for digestive disorders for the past eight years. In addition, Inova Fairfax is home to the highly-specialized Center for Advanced Endoscopy.
The endoscopy center at Inova Fairfax Hosptial houses six procedure rooms, two of which have fluoroscopy capabilities. All rooms offer high definition video capabilities.
In addition to our gastroenterologist team that treats adult patients, we also have five pediatric gastroenterologists who specialize in diagnosing and treating children.
Our services include:
- Colonoscopy — examines the rectum and large intestine
- Esophogastroduodenoscopy (more commonly referred to as EGD) — examines the inside of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum
- Bronchoscopy — used to view the airways
- ERCP — examines the bile ducts
We also offer capsule endoscopy. This procedure allows the physician to examine the entire small intestine. Patients swallow a vitamin-sized capsule that is actually a small camera and light. The capsule moves through the intestine and transmits images to a data recorder worn at the patient's waist.
The capsule is disposable and passes naturally with a bowel movement. This procedure was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2001. Capsule endoscopy is not a substitute for regular endoscopy, but may be used when additional diagnostic information is needed.
Inova Fairfax Hospital also offers the Center for Advanced Endoscopy, the first of its kind in Northern Virginia. Click here for more information about this high-tech service designed for specialized cases.
