The orthopedic center at Inova Fairfax Hospital is noted throughout the region for excellence in medical care. Orthopedic surgeons at the center perform hundreds of total joint replacements and hundreds of arthroscopic procedures each year, and expertly treat the severely injured trauma patients brought from all over the region to the only Level I (highest category) trauma center in Northern Virginia.
Through ongoing quality improvement (QI) efforts, staff and physicians work together to achieve the best possible outcomes for their patients. As part of QI, the center has established clinical pathways to organize each patient's care from the time surgery is scheduled through completion of outpatient rehabilitative care. This was done as early as 1992, long before similar forward-looking measures were initiated elsewhere.
Clinical pathways assure that each patient's needs are addressed at the right moment in the treatment process, to assure successful progress in recovery as well as efficient use of medical services.
The first of these, a clinical pathway for hip-replacement surgery, has dramatically reduced the average patient's hospital stay and the average cost for a patient's treatment while simultaneously improving the quality of care. Scores that measure improvement in patients' day-to-day functioning after hip replacement have continued to be impressive.
