Joint Replacement
Inova Fairfax Hospital provides comprehensive services for patients who need replacement of hip, knee or shoulder joints, from pre-operative assessment through rehabilitation. The center's orthopedic surgeons have experience with the very latest procedures as well as access to custom implants for particularly challenging cases. Particular attention is given to choosing the implant best suited to the individual patient's needs.
The joint replacement team includes board certified orthopedic surgeons with a special interest and expertise in joint replacements, as well as physical therapists, occupational therapists, specialized orthopedic nurses and social workers. The center's director, Jeffrey Malka, MD, performed his first cemented hip implantation in 1965 in Switzerland, nearly a decade before the first such procedures were done in the United States. Surgeons regularly meet to discuss complex cases and evaluate the latest developments in joint replacement surgery. They also regularly attend national conferences to keep abreast of advances in the field.
The program pioneered a unique method of assuring the best possible outcomes for our patients. Called the clinical "pathway," the process begins at the surgeon's office prior to admission and continues all the way through the follow-up visits years later. By following the pathway, the patient is assured that no step is missed in his or her care. The pathway has shortened hospital stays and reduced costs, giving more patients access to joint replacement surgery without overburdening the health care budget.
A special gym and physical therapy unit in the center permit convenient, rapid rehabilitation of patients. Also, center staff carefully analyze each case to monitor the excellence of care. The results of these analyses are regularly reviewed by our surgeons, who strive to ensure the best possible outcome for every patient.
