Joint Replacement
Joint replacement services at the hospital provides comprehensive care for patients who need replacement of hip, knee or shoulder joints. Inova Fairfax Hospital is conducting long-term outcome studies to document our quality and ensure that our patients achieve the best possible results uniformly.
Joint replacement surgery is a highly specialized procedure that typically requires pre-hospital planning, hospitalization, home care and rehabilitation. The joint replacement team includes board-certified surgeons who have experience with the latest procedures. From pre-operative assessment to rehabilitation, care is customized for the individual patient.
A gym and physical therapy equipment available on the orthopedic unit permit convenient, rapid rehabilitation - and shorter hospital stay - for patients.
Orthopedic Trauma Injuries
Because Inova Fairfax Hospital has the only Level-I trauma center in Northern Virginia, orthopedic surgeons from Inova Fairfax Hospital have extensive experience caring for trauma patients with orthopedic injuries and with the coordination of follow-up treatment and rehabilitation.
Patients involved in serious, multisystem trauma often have complex orthopedic injuries requiring expert surgical and rehabilitative care.
Sports Injuries,
Arthroscopic Surgery and
Cartilage Transplantation
Physicians and staff affiliated with our orthopedic services are highly trained and skilled in treating a range of sports-related injuries. We provide the latest arthroscopic equipment, and our specialized physicians have extensive experience in this complex but minimally invasive method of diagnosis and treatment. With arthroscopy, many patients, including those requiring procedures such as anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, can be treated on an outpatient basis. By eliminating the overnight hospital stay, arthroscopy offers greater comfort and convenience to the patient, as well as considerable cost savings over open surgeries.
In addition to arthroscopic surgery a new transplant procedure called "autologous cartilage transplantation" (ACI) is also available on an outpatient basis. This transplant procedure allows cells, which have previously been removed from the patient's knee during arthroscopic surgery to be grown in culture and then reimplanted into their knee to repair focal cartilage damage and hopefully prevent subsequent arthritis.
Many of our orthopedic physicians affiliated with our sports medicine program work with local athletic teams and organizations to make injury prevention and treatment information available to the community. Our physicians and allied health professionals also make presentations in the community on exercise, fitness and other sports medicine topics.
Spine Surgery
Repair of disc injuries, congenital spinal malformations, disc disease or spinal cord injuries is a highly specialized process. Our skilled and knowledgeable orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons have the experience and expertise to accurately diagnose and treat problems of the spine caused by congenital conditions, injury or disease.
Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery
Hand and upper extremity surgery is an exacting subspecialty requiring a high degree of skill and knowledge. Hand specialists and staff of Inova Orthopedic Services use the latest equipment and techniques to help patients achieve the best possible recovery, whether the problem is caused by trauma, repetitive motion injury, congenital or degenerative problems or other illness or injury.
Foot and Ankle Surgery
Foot and ankle surgery can restore mobility, comfort, and independence to people who have problems caused by injury, structural deformity, or systemic illness. Specific areas of expertise include care of patients with arthritis, diabetes, and nerve and muscle disorders. Board-certified orthopedists and podiatrists utilize the latest re-constructive techniques and carefully tailored rehabilitation plans to give the patient the best chance to return to full activity.
Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery
Pediatric orthopedic care is provided in conjunction with Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children, Northern Virginia's leader in improving the health of children and young adults in the community.
Medical and nursing staff are experienced in treating children's orthopedic problems, including pediatric trauma, fractures, spinal injuries and birth abnormalities.
We also provide evaluation and surgical correction of congenital and acquired deformities in the pediatric musculoskeletal system such as scoliosis.
The orthopedic management of bone and soft tissue tumors is highly specialized and requires the input of multiple cancer-related subspecialties. A full range of orthopedic oncology care is available, including novel surgical techniques in limb sparing for both adult and pediatric patients. Care is often coordinated with adult and pediatric oncologists, as well as other cancer specialists available at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
