MRI-guided Breast Biopsy
New Location
Inova Fairfax Hospital currently provides this service at the hospital. However, beginning in February 2005 and in coordination with the opening of a fourth MRI unit, MRI-guided breast biopsy will transfer to The Fairfax MRI Center, (owned by Inova Fairfax Hospital. Management and professional services are provided by Fairfax Radiological Consultants, P.C.) allowing patients the convenience of having the procedure at an outpatient facility.
breast biopsy, a new technology that enhances evaluation and management of breast disease and complements diagnostic breast MRI services, is now available at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
MRI-guided breast biopsy is critical for differentiating between benign and malignant lesions that are identified by MRI, but cannot be localized by alternate means. The procedure is performed by placing a needle into the breast through a small skin nick and obtaining multiple core biopsy samples using a vacuum assisted biopsy device. Images are taken without and then with intravenous contrast. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes and is well tolerated by patients.
The addition of MRI-guided breast biopsy enhances our ability to care for patients with or at risk for breast cancer. We will continue to offer diagnostic breast MRI service, a highly sensitive examination for the detection of breast cancer that is complementary to, not a substitute for, mammography. Diagnostic breast MRI can detect cancers that cannot be seen by mammography or ultrasound. These images are also taken without and then with intravenous contrast and the exam takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Breast MRI is available at The Fairfax MRI Center, which has state-of-the-art scanners, breast-imaging coils, and highly trained radiologists dedicated to breast imaging and interpretation.
