Our Commitment is to support your decision to breastfeed your baby. Inova Loudoun Hospital’s International Board-certified Lactation Consultants are here to support your decision to breastfeed with counseling, education, support and supplies.

Board-certified lactation consultants provide the following services:

Basic position and latch of the infant
Information about practices that promote successful breastfeeding
Preventing and managing common concerns such as poor latch, inadequate milk transfer or supply, nipple or breast pain and calming a fussy baby
Milk expression and storage for mother who must be separated from their babies
Strategies for breastfeeding after returning to work
Breastfeeding in challenging situations, such as breastfeeding twins or triplets, premature or sick infants, or infants in special medical situations

All outpatient services are available by appointment. Outpatient consults are available Monday through Thursday, afternoons.

FREE Breastfeeding Drop-in Support
Wednesdays from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. in The Birthing Inn classroom. Latch checks and questions welcome.

In-patient breastfeeding class with mother and infant
Bedside breastfeeding evaluations and problem solving as needed
Neonatal intensive-care nursery visits for premature infants or infants with special needs
Multidisciplinary team approach to breastfeeding issues with your obstetrician/nurse
Midwife and pediatrician

Services Offered After You and Your Infant Are Home

Private lactation consults, including weight checks and nursing bra fittings
Breastfeeding advice over the phone
Breastpump information, rental and sales
Breastfeeding supplies, including nursing bras and apparel, nursing pads and pillows, lanolin and milk storage bags and bottles

At our boutique, you will find a full array of breastfeeding items and accessories. Boutique Sales hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Breastfeeding Provides Many Benefits for Infants

Breastmilk is the ideal nutrition for the newborn infant
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding an infant for one full year
Breastfeeding decreases the incidence of many illnesses, such as asthma, juvenile diabetes, diarrhea, otitis media (ear infection) and certain childhood cancers
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is less likely in the breastfed infant
Breastfed infants even have higher IQs!

Breastfeeding is the most convenient and least expensive way to feed an infant

Maternal weight loss is more rapid in the early postpartum period during breastfeeding
Breastfeeding provides women with a certain measure of protection against pre-menopausal breast cancer and ovarian cancer

Choosing to breastfeed your infant is a very important decision. Our staff is supportive and skilled in helping breastfeeding mothers and infants, sensitive to families' different cultural needs, eager to "meet the mother where she is" during the breastfeeding experience, and available to help the mother plan for how to continue breastfeeding if she returns to the workplace.
