Lower Extremity Amputation Prevention (LEAP)
The LEAP program is a diabetic foot screening. The LEAP foot screen can help prevent amputations by identifying people who have lost protective sensation in their feet. In the absence of protective sensation, even normal walking can cause injuries that are difficult for a person with diabetes to heal.
What does a LEAP foot screening include?
- Annual foot screen, including evaluation for loss of protective sensation, measurement of arterial pressures, and foot physical exam
- Education
- Footwear evaluation
- Management of simple foot problems
To schedule a LEAP exam call the Inova Dorothea R. Fisher Wound Healing Center at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital 703-664-8020.
