The Internal Medicine Residency Program will be primarily based at Inova Fairfax hospital for inpatient rotations on the general wards, intensive care units, emergency medicine, general medicine consult services as well as the inpatient portions of sub-specialty consultative services. The outpatient electives as well as ambulatory training will be provided by Inova Fairfax faculty members in Inova specialty clinics, select Inova associated community practices and Inova Internal Medicine Group clinic locations. Additionally, second and third year residents will also get an opportunity to do elective rotations at the National Institutes of Health in Rheumatology, Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases and Medical Oncology. During the second and third year, residents will also have the option of pursuing an individualized curriculum with specialized rotations such as procedure month, research month etc.
Rotating residents and medical students have the privilege of using the state-of-the-art Simulation Center in the VCU School of Medicine – Inova Campus.
The bimonthly procedural workshops allow residents and students to work with Inova Fairfax Hospital Department of Medicine faculty on learning specific procedural skills. Participants practice obtaining vascular access and lumbar puncture on simulation models with faculty supervision and receive real-time feedback on their technical skills and medical knowledge.
