Message from the Program Director
Dear Prospective Residents,
Thank you for your interest in our program. The Department of Medicine at Inova Fairfax Hospital has a long-standing tradition of commitment to medical education. We are excited to receive initial accreditation from the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education and are eager to recruit talented medical students into our program. I know that once you explore our programs and facilities, you will see that a world-class facility like Inova Fairfax Hospital deserves the best team of residents – and I hope that team will soon include you.
The Inova Fairfax Medical Campus (IFMC) houses Inova Fairfax Hospital, Inova Children's Hospital, Inova Women's Hospital and Inova Heart and Vascular Institute. We have been voted as the number 1 hospital in Washington, DC, region for two years in a row by U.S. News and World Report. Our almost 1,000 bed capacity campus allows us to offer our trainees a vast variety of medical conditions as well as an incredible diversity of patient population. In addition, the IFMC is home to the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine’s branch campus. The VCU-Inova campus is well integrated into our department’s inpatient and outpatient rotations as well as sub-specialty electives. In addition, we have been running a well sought-after Transitional Year Residency Program for several decades as well as a major affiliate for inpatient rotations for categorical residents from Georgetown and George Washington University Internal Medicine Training programs. Our student rotators come primarily from VCU-Inova campus, Georgetown and George Washington University Schools of Medicine. Our teaching faculty members have faculty appointments with our affiliate medical schools and have received many teaching awards.
I am extremely proud to be a part of this department. Our mission is to recruit and train talented young physicians ready to enter practice in either general internal medicine or an internal medicine sub-specialty fellowship to maintain and improve the health of adults in Northern Virginia and surrounding communities. Our goal is to provide a structured, high quality educational experience and training with the ultimate goal of graduating outstanding comprehensive internists capable of managing diverse patients with a broad range of diseases. We will assist residents in developing the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to become an independent practitioner.
We look forward to hearing from you as well as meeting you during your interview trail. Our dedicated faculty members are a testament to the strength of our department as a majority of them forged their connections during their training with us as students or residents and returned to practice here.
