Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infects approximately 175 million people worldwide with an estimated four million Americans infected. Due to HCV's prevalence as a "quiet" virus, most infected patients do not display symptoms of liver disease and are unaware of the damage that may be occurring. However, HCV accounts for nearly 10,000 deaths per year and is the leading indication for liver transplants in the United States. In the early 1990s, available interferon therapy eradicated HCV in only 10 to 15 percent of patients. A combined Pegylated Interferon and Ribavirin treatment increased this eradication rate to 55 percent.
