September 24, 2007
Innovative Policy Gives Workers Up to 30 Days Paid Leave
Falls Church, VA— Inova Health System was recognized by the Fairfax
County Board of Supervisors on Monday, Sept. 24 for developing and implementing
a new leave policy for organ donors.
The policy, which took
effect in April 2006, states that Inova employees who become bone marrow or
organ donors can take up to 30 days of paid leave while recuperating from the
procedure. The policy applies to full-time workers who have been employed by
Inova for at least six months. The policy also allows for time off for medical
testing to determine bone marrow or organ donation
compatibility.
Patrick Christiansen, administrator, Inova Heart and Vascular
Institute; Hugo Aguas, assistant vice president, Human Resources, Inova Fairfax
Hospital; and Johann Jonsson, MD, director, Kidney and Pancreas Transplant
Program, Inova Fairfax Hospital, were on hand to accept the certificate on behalf of
Inova.
The Fairfax County Commission on Organ and Tissue Donation
and Transplantation has been working to encourage Fairfax County businesses
to consider and implement such policies, and both Inova and the Commission were
recognized for this significant achievement.
