March 26, 2008 Institute Is One of Three U.S. Hospitals to Perform Procedures for Symposium of World's Top Cardiovascular Physicians
Falls Church, VA – Cardiologists at the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute this morning shared their expertise with physicians around the world by performing a live case demonstration for attendees of a large international conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
James Thompson, MD, pediatric cardiologist, Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children, performed a minimally invasive procedure to close a hole in the heart, known as an atrial septal defect (ASD), of a 14-year-old boy. This procedure involves implanting a device made of two wire- mesh discs that clasp the hole on either side, firmly closing the opening. The device is implanted by a catheter that is inserted in the patient's groin.
This symposium of international cardiologists is unique in that procedures are demonstrated from start to finish, to address unexpected contingencies and complications. Two other hospitals in the U.S., as well as hospitals in Italy and Germany, also performed live case demonstrations.
