Benefits of Minimally Invasive Hip Surgery
There are many benefits to minimally invasive hip replacement,
according to
the Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, they include:
- Patients have less pain from the incision, which are more cosmetic in appearance.
- Less muscle damage occurs.
- Blood loss is lessened, and rehabilitation is faster.
- Hospital stays are shorter. For traditional hip replacement, hospital stays average four to five days. With less invasive procedures, the hospital stay may be as short as one to three days.
- Most patients are able to bear full weight on the operated leg within 24 hours, and crutches or other walking aids are usually used for just the first few weeks.
People who undergo minimally invasive hip replacement procedures often reap major benefits. Within a day or two of surgery, they are walking with crutches or other mobility aids.
By causing less disruption to the muscle and tendon, the blood loss and postoperative pain can be significantly less. Additionally, because there's less pain, rehabilitation can start sooner, shortening hospital stays and increasing patient satisfaction.
A few weeks after surgery, most patients walk independently.
However, not all patients are candidates for minimally invasive hip replacement surgery, but when this procedure is appropriate, patients are happy to be able to resume their normal activities much more quickly.
