In 1961, Alexandria Hospital was the first facility in the nation to staff an emergency department around-the-clock with full-time dedicated emergency physicians. This set the course for emergency medicine throughout the country and became known nationally as the “Alexandria Plan.”
Inova Alexandria Hospital and the American College of Emergency Physicians hosted a joint 50th anniversary celebration of the inception of the ‘Alexandria Plan’
recognizing the incredible significance this plan has had for the delivery of quality care to patients throughout the country.
