Information on Health Insurance Exchanges
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) created guidelines for a new kind of marketplace for health insurance. Starting October 1, 2013, health insurance exchanges will be available for you to shop for health insurance online.
Depending on the type of insurance coverage you wish to purchase and your total household income, you may be eligible for reduced rates on the premiums you pay.

What are exchanges?
Exchanges (also referred to as “marketplaces”) are online markets where consumers and small businesses can go to shop for health insurance. On these sites, you can compare the health insurance plans that are available to you and then purchase a plan online.
Who creates and maintains the exchanges?
Each state has the option to create and operate its own exchange. If the state opts not to offer an exchange, a federal exchange will be available to the residents of that state. Outside of the government, private exchanges may also exist.
