Inpatient General Rehabilitation Program
The General Rehabilitation Program offers an individualized rehabilitation plan
for people with skeletal and neuromuscular injuries, illnesses or conditions. Services are designed for those with Guillian Barre syndrome, multiple sclerosis (MS), amputations, multiple fractures or severe deconditioning. Located within an acute care hospital, the program draws on a wide range of resources to meet patients' complex medical needs. These patients may experience a variety of symptoms including:
- weakness or paralysis
- loss of bowel and bladder control
- decreased mobility
- severe pain
- poor endurance
- inability to perform self-care tasks
Program Goals
The goal of the General Rehabilitation Program is to help patients make necessary accommodations for their disability, achieve their highest level of functioning and return to the community. The interdisciplinary treatment team is trained in the medical, psychological and physical needs of these patients. Self-management is an objective of each patient's treatment plan, and learning self-care skills is an essential part of that plan. The team of rehabilitation specialists works with patients to:
- strengthen unaffected and affected muscle groups
- teach new methods of mobility
- provide training in bowel and bladder control
- teach the use of adaptive equipment
- teach pain management techniques
- teach prevention and wellness strategies
- provide education and support
The multifaceted approach combines individual therapy sessions, family training and group treatment. Our patient-centered rehabilitation philosophy encourages family participation and education is a fundamental component of the program. Discharge planning includes home assessments to identify and minimize architectural barriers, teach family members the best ways to assist the patient, provide guidance with equipment selection and purchase, and coordinate the next steps in rehabilitation treatment.
