Comprehensive Community Mobility Evaluation (CCME)

To schedule an evaluation, call 703-664-7190. A referral from your physician is required. Please check with your insurance company prior to scheduling your appointment since most companies do not cover the cost of the evaluation.

During recovery from a serious illness or injury, some patients feel uncomfortable about returning to their community or driving a motor vehicle. Indeed, it is true that some illnesses and injuries involve a reduction of one or more of the skills required for safe community mobility and driving.

Inova Rehabilitation Center’s Comprehensive Community Mobility Evaluation (CCME) helps determine a patient’s readiness to return to community mobility. The evaluation includes the use of public transportation and specifically, a patient’s readiness to return to driving. Skills are assessed in a safe, clinical setting, through one-on-one testing and use of a state-of-the-art driving simulator, before being attempted on the road.

Evaluation Components

Conducted by a certified occupational therapist, the convenient two- to three-hour assessment is the only service of its kind in Northern Virginia. After a thorough review of the patient’s medical history and his/her driving and community mobility goals, the therapist will determine which of the following areas to test:

  • Vision testing checks eye movement, tracking of moving objects, peripheral vision, overall acuity and the ability to scan the community environment.
  • Perception tests evaluate how the patient processes and interprets visual information, such as depth perception and separation of objects from background, and auditory information.
  • Motor skills testing measures reaction time and the ability to plan and process a sequence of actions, such as seeing a light change from green to yellow and moving the right foot from the gas pedal to the brake. Patients also are tested for strength, balance and coordination as required for crossing a street or accessing public transportation.
  • Cognition tests focus on the patient’s ability to analyze situations, form judgments and made decisions through driving scenarios and simulated community situations.

The results of the CCME are sent to the patient’s physician for evaluation. Patients who score well and who wish to resume driving may be sent directly to the Department of Motor Vehicles without further testing. The physician may prescribe an on-road driving test or adaptive equipment and refer the patient to the appropriate resources. If needed, the physician may recommend additional pre-driving or mobility training at Inova Rehabilitation Center.

A physician’s referral is required for evaluation.
