Vestibular Rehabilitation Program
This program is designed to assist individuals who have one or more of the following symptoms:
- dizziness
- wooziness
- nausea
- light and/or noise sensitivity
- balance problems
- vertigo or ringing in the ear(s)
Evaluations are performed by an occupational or physical therapist to further assess and localize problems.
What to Expect During the Evaluation:
- questionnaire about symptoms and how they limit independence
- occulomotor assessment (eye movements)
- physical measurements: muscle strength, range of motion, posture, coordination
- balance assessment
- movement assessment—how movements such as standing, walking and rolling and various environments affect symptoms
Individuals may experience one or more of the following:
- difficulty riding in the car (new onset)
- unable to get on a stationary bike or treadmill
- need to touch the wall or furniture when walking around
- become dizzy/woozy when rolling, laying down, sitting up or bending over
- may be unable to tolerate large, open busy environments, e.g., shopping malls, parks, airports
A home exercise program is given to each patient. Vestibular problems need to be addressed on a daily basis. Follow-through is the key to success. The therapist will be involved to reassess progress and adapt the home program as needed.
A physician’s referral is required for evaluation.
