Stroke Overview Stroke is a type of cardiovascular disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it starts to die.
Primary Stroke Center designation Inova Fairfax Hospital and Inova Alexandria Hospital are proud to be the only two hospitals in Northern Virginia that are designated as Primary Stroke Centers, the gold seal of approval for stroke care from The Joint Commission, an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies healthcare organizations and programs in the United States.
The Joint Commission's Certificate of Distinction for Primary Stroke Centers recognizes centers that make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care. Achievement of certification signifies that the services our stroke centers provide have the critical elements to achieve long-term success in improving outcomes. It is the best signal to our community that the quality care we provide is effectively managed to meet the unique and specialized needs of stroke patients.
