Pediatric Bone Marrow and Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantation An extensive program exists for the bone marrow and peripheral stem cell transplantation of children ages birth to 21 years of age. A truly collaborative team approach enables the nationally recognized program at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children to join with the adult bone marrow tranplant team in providing state-of-the-art care to children who have hematologic and oncologic disorders, which can effectively be treated with successful bone marrow transplantation.
Coordination of care begins immediately to help ensure that the treatment prior to the actual transplant is optimal. High dose chemotherapy and immune suppression preparative regimen, as well as Total Body Irradiation (TBI), are pediatric specific, and are chosen only after consultation with the leading national centers. Care is provided pediatric hematology/oncology as well as a full complement of pediatric medical and surgical specialists with experience in the challenges of bone marrow transplantation.
Patients receive their treatments either on the bone marrow tranplant floor or in the specially outfitted rooms on the pediatric oncology floor. Nurses, social workers, play therapists and dieticians are specially trained in the needs of children undergoing bone marrow transplantation. Finally, when appropriate, outpatient care is continued in the pediatric infusion center located next to the hospital.
