Message from the Chairman
Inova Health System Foundation
Fred Sachs
Introducing the New Foundation Chair
Long-time Inova
supporter now at the helm of the Inova Health System
Foundation
“Giving back to the community is a responsibility I take
very seriously,”
shares Fred Sachs, president and CEO of Precision
Doors & Hardware, Inc. and
the new board chair of the Inova Health
System Foundation (IHSF). And indeed he
does — Sachs is now serving on
his third board with Inova. He started in 1997
with the Inova Health
System board of trustees, then the Health Care Services
board in 2002.
He currently serves as the chair of the audit committee for the Inova Health
System board. He first became involved in
the 80’s when he returned a
favor for a supporter of Alexandria’s Waterfront
Festival. Sachs had
helped expand this annual event and was soliciting the
community for
support. One of his contacts agreed to assist but only if Sachs
would,
in turn, support Alexandria Hospital, which he’s continued to support for
many years. This led to his involvement with Inova once the merger was
complete
in 1997.
“Participating on the different boards has offered me a unique perspective, in that I’ve worked with physicians, nurses, and the day to day operations of Inova,” states Sachs. “I’ve gained a better working knowledge of the health care system, which has brought new meaning to the importance of philanthropy in addressing the needs.”
“Fred Sachs is one of the most wonderful guys I know,” says Joe Viar, a long-time trustee on both the Inova Alexandria Hospital Foundation board and the IHSF board. “I have worked with him for over 20 years in both the hospital and civic arenas and welcome his leadership on the board.”
Sachs and his wife Cathy reside in Alexandria, where they’ve lived for the
past 30 years. They are both committed community members and devote a
great deal
of time to volunteer projects in and around Alexandria and
Northern Virginia.
They enjoy spending time at their tree farm on
Virginia’s Northern Neck, where
they raise loblolly pines cultivated
for use as telephone poles and construction
components. When asked for
a parting comment to leave our readers, he didn’t
skip a beat. “There
is no better dollar spent than that to improve the health of
our
community.” The foundation looks forward to his leadership and generous
spirit in the years to come.
