Inova Behavioral Health Services is a large and dynamic behavioral health program based in Northern Virginia and serving the greater Washington, DC metro area. Inova's five-hospital health system includes a level one trauma center and over 150 ambulatory care sites. Three of the five hospitals offer inpatient psychiatric units and one contains an inpatient detoxification center.

Fellows will rotate at Inova's flagship Inova Fairfax Medical Campus, where 41 acute adult psychiatric beds, 25 detox beds, and 15 child and adolescent beds are provided to the northern Virginia community. Fellows rotate through all services, a Psychiatric Urgent Care and emergency department, and a consult liaison service. Through the one-year program, fellows obtain knowledge and skills necessary for managing mental health disorders across the lifespan.

Six rotations are offered, each in two month increments:

  • Adult Inpatient
  • Addiction Medicine
  • Adolescent Psychiatry: Autism Clinic
  • Consult Liaison
  • Emergency Department Crisis
  • Partial Hospitalization Program

CV, cover letter, and recommendations are due by 5/1 of the academic year, with a start date of 10/1. The Fellow will be fully credentialed through Inova, and receive a competitive fellowship salary. The Fellow will be offered full employee benefits to include health insurance, CME allowance and PTO. The official start date is contingent upon completing the credentialing and privileging process.

Upon completion of the APP fellowship program, the APP will:

  1. Provide patient-centered care that is compassionate, valued, appropriate and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving bio-psychosocial, clinical, epidemiological and medical sciences, for the provision of evidence-based patient care.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate one's own practice and improve outcomes of patient care based on best available evidence, constant self-evaluation and life-long learning.
  4. Demonstrate effective communication and collaboration with patients, their families, and inter-professional colleagues.
  5. Demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional roles and responsibilities and adherence to ethical principles.
  6. Demonstrate an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of health care, as well as the ability to call effectively on other resources in the system to provide optimal health care.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to practice within an interprofessional team in a manner that optimizes safe, effective patient and population centered care.
  8. Demonstrate qualities required to sustain lifelong growth as healthcare professional and leader.

Fellowship Program Details

Curriculum – APP fellows meet with the program director weekly for the first month, bi-weekly for 3 months, monthly thereafter and on an as needed basis. APP fellows participate in didactic lectures on Tuesday afternoons with psychiatry residents. Participation in didactic lectures with psychology interns will be incorporated on Monday afternoons.
Evaluations – The program uses evaluation tools from faculty/colleagues and organization evaluations for each rotation. Evaluation from the preceptor occur midway through each rotation and at the conclusion of each rotation. The use of the new hire orientation checklist for advanced practice providers is incorporated.
Purpose, Goals and Objectives – The Inova Behavioral Health Fellowship’s purpose is to directly improve outcomes by enriching knowledge, furthering critical thinking, and enhancing expertise.
