The Fair Oaks location, which is on the Fair Oaks Hospital campus, is an outpatient physician clinic whose team members work closely and expertly with our medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, medical specialists, and advanced practitioners to serve patients with a variety of cancers and hematologic conditions.  The clinic is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.   The clinics are closed for the seven recognized Inova holidays and there are no on-call requirements.   Our team members work five 8 hour shifts. 

The surgical oncology nurse manager is a professional registered nurse leader with surgical oncology-specific clinical knowledge who provides safe therapeutic care in holistic and systematic way.  He/she facilitates and oversees the care delivery for patients for the physician clinics under the direction of the regional clinical director and physician leader and in collaboration with other department leaders.  The surgical oncology nurse manager role encompasses the following duties: 

  • Supports Inova's mission and strategic plans by managing oncology outpatient operations
  • Provides input to budget development and attainment of fiscal goals.
  • Ensures unit compliance with quality, safety, regulatory requirements, and JCAHO standards. 
  • Demonstrates leadership traits and supporting behavioral competencies.
  • Manages clinical and non-clinical staff, including day-to-day supervision, employee relations, and staff development. 
  • Serves as primary liaison and information resource for unit.
  • Oversees the provision of therapeutic care in a holistic, evidence based environment which produces excellent patient care with optimal patient outcomes. 
  • Utilizes the quality process and best practices to improve clinical operation of the unit.
  • Utilizes JCAHO standards and nursing practice tools and research to support a care delivery system that produces quality care with optimal outcomes.

Minimum requirements: 

  • BSN (MSN preferred)
  • BLS
  • Two years surgical or oncology experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Proven leadership skills and highly effective at leading a team and fostering a team environment.
  • Demonstrates professionalism.
  • Customer focused, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain partnerships.
  • Strong problem solving capabilities and can effectively prioritize.
  • Able to serve as a mentor and resource to other RNs.


  • Two or more years of surgical oncology leadership experience. 
  • Oncology Certified Nurse Certification (or ability to obtain within first two years of employment)
