Inova Schar Cancer Institute (Inova Health Systems) has an opening for a full-time clinical Cancer Genetic Counselor to join a dynamic and supportive team of five cancer genetic counselors to provide risk assessment and clinical follow up for individuals with or at-risk for hereditary cancer syndromes.

Our highly collaborative team is seeking an additional member who can manage genetic education, risk assessment, counseling, coordination of genetic testing and support to patients and their family members at-risk for inherited cancer syndromes. The successful candidate will independently manage cases and communicate between the patient and their multi-disciplinary care team in diagnosis and evaluations of such conditions, and review options for screening and prevention and make appropriate referrals. Weekly team meetings and mentoring by experienced cancer genetics counselors provides support and consistency.

There is also the opportunity to participate in tumor boards and teaching/mentoring of genetic counseling graduate students and genetics fellows/residents from local training programs.

Job Responsibilities
  • Attends routine Cancer Center meetings and serves as a clinical resource to the healthcare team.
  • Performs inherited disease risk assessments and cancer risk assessments through review of family and medical histories.
  • Provides individualized genetic counseling and testing to patients/families identified at increased risk for inherited cancers.
  • Facilitates patient awareness and access to research and clinical studies.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Coordinates counseling sessions to meet the needs of patients, families and members of the healthcare team.
  • Provides written communication to referring physicians regarding the consultation, test results and suggested medical management.
  • Conducts ongoing promotion of genetics counseling program to physicians, patients and to the community by developing written materials and public presentations.


Qualifications

Experience:

  • Trained in clinical genetics, communicating genetic risk, counseling techniques.
  • One - three years of clinical cancer genetics experience preferred, but not required.

Education:

  • Master’s degree in genetic counseling

Certification:

  • Board eligible for certification by the ABGC.
