Job Description

As a Pharmacist, you will participate as an integral member of our team, contributing to Inova’s mission to provide world-class healthcare – every time, every touch – to each person in every community we have the privilege to serve. The effective, efficient, and safe operation of our department is essential to that mission. You will ensure safe, appropriate and cost-effective medication therapies for patients according to established policies, procedures and protocols. You will collaborate with and represent pharmacy as part of a growing and ever-expanding multidisciplinary team. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Verifies and processes medication orders 
    • Reviews all orders for clinical appropriateness by assessing for
      • Contraindications
      • Interactions
      • Allergies
      • Appropriate drug and dose
      • Patient’s current presentation
    • Ensures orders have appropriate indication documented
    • Consults with providers or nurses for all orders outside of normal usage
    • Documents all consultations and interventions
    • Detects and reports suspected adverse drug reactions
    • Conducts chart review of patients within practice area as assigned
    • Ensures compliance with Inova formulary

 

  • Participates in training of new pharmacy team members
    • Provides quality on the job training for team members new to role
    • Provides timely and professional feedback for trainees
    • Collaborates with leadership to constantly improve training program

 

  • Ensures compliance with laws, regulations, and standards 
    • Federal (FDA, DEA, CMS) 
    • Commonwealth of Virginia

  • Provides oversight of pharmacy technicians and processes
    • Guarantees all work is done safely
    • Ensures any reported errors are resolved and escalated as needed
    • Ensures accurate and timely medication dispensing
      • Drug storage
      • Compounding
      • Dispensing
      • Labeling
      • Repackaging
    • Maintains appropriate medication stock in Automated Dispensing Machines (ADM)
      • Routine replenishment
      • Stock outs
      • Resolution of discrepancies
      • Retrieval of expired medications
      • General troubleshooting
    • Ensures compliance with all controlled substance processes
      • Storage
      • Inventory 
      • Security
      • Dispensing
      • Waste
      • Documentation
    • Fulfills roles and responsibilities of pharmacy technicians when necessary

 

  • Ensures reliable and effective functioning of pharmacy clinical operations
    • Works independently with minimal supervision.
    • Keeps Pharmacy areas and equipment clean, neat and well organized.
    • Takes ownership for daily department operations in the absence of the manager or supervisor in accordance with established procedures.
    • Performs all necessary troubleshooting as evidenced by resolution of problems.


Additional Requirements

  • Required Licenses
    • Virginia Pharmacist License

 

  • Required Education and Experience
    • Bachelors in Pharmacy
    • Doctor of Pharmacy Preferred
    • 1 Year of hospital pharmacy required 

 

  • Preferred Education/Certifications
    • PGY1 Residency
    • Board Certification or Certificate in practice area
    • BLS
    • ACLS/PALS

 

  • Required Skills
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to demonstrate pharmaceutical knowledge 

Schedule - 32 Hours Evenings/Rotating Weekends
